We’ve been having some minor plumbing issues lately. Small amounts of sediment backing up into the tub after a load of laundry. Had a plumber come out, pipes look good. Had a septic company come out, they dug up the tank and one of the lines and told me the drain field is failing. My options at this point seem to be either connect to sewer I’m in the Alderwood district or pay someone to repair the drain field off the books because the county is unlikely to approve a permit for a new field. I’m looking for any recommendations or advice. Anyone familiar with AWWD know ballpark price of connecting to sewer?

Hansen Nothing gets your attention like a backed-up toilet, and that’s just what public officials throughout the greater Spokane area are facing: The city of Spokane’s wastewater treatment plant, located off the Aubrey L. White Parkway on the Spokane River, has handled much of the region’s needs until now. But with more people moving in and the Valley becoming more sewered, its capacity is reaching its limit.

Seven days a week, the city plant treats 44 million gallons of sewage.

Submit Site As Spokane County contemplates the start of the new sewer construction year, the Board of Commissioners is looking to the past to make sure that those who missed out on the chance to hook up to the wastewater-treatment system when they had the chance do so now. The commissioners approved a plan Tuesday whereby home owners in neighborhoods where sewer pipes were laid in — but declined to pay the hook-up fee at that time and remained on septic systems — will have to switch over in Next year, those who were hooked up in and would need to be hooked up; in , it would be neighborhoods sewered in and ; and so on.

According to Bruce Rawls, director of Spokane County utilities, by making sewer hook-ups mandatory — albeit on a year-to-year basis — the county is meeting two goals at once: By moving to a countywide wastewater treatment program, the aquifer is protected from contaminants from underground septic systems such as phosphorus or nitrates. In , partly due to the hardship of having to spend thousands of dollars to hook up to the county system, home owners who had septic tanks were allowed to keep using them even though sewer lines were being installed beneath the streets in front of their homes.

Mandatory sewer hookup notices may be mailed in January to residents of Spokane Valley and suburban portions of Spokane County for the first time in more than three years.

County commissioners informally agreed with the proposal by Utilities Director Bruce Rawls, subject to assurances later this year that plans for a new sewage treatment plant are on schedule. In mid , commissioners suspended a requirement for homeowners to connect to the sewer system because it appeared the county would run out of capacity at the Spokane municipal treatment plant before the county could build its own plant.

In other words, new Commissioner Bonnie Mager said, the county chose to allow continued use of old septic tanks over the Spokane-Rathdrum Aquifer so developers could continue to build new homes.
