Guth March 22, The furor over George W. Candidates have visited the campus in search of Republican votes ever since with no discernible repercussions—until now. Instead, McCain attended services at a BJU stronghold, Hampton Park Baptist Church, albeit without having a chance to offer his own views on courting practices or the pope. Mar 22, issue The school does prohibit interracial dating—or it did until a few weeks ago, when university president Bob Jones III rescinded the policy. It also rejects the Catholic Church and almost all Protestant churches, for that matter , sometimes in less than civil language. And it holds all sorts of religious and political views long out of fashion. But many other inconvenient facts were ignored in the rush to portray BJU as a sort of Aryan Nations-South—facts that would give a somewhat more complicated picture of the school.

For almost years, it has been a bastion of bigotry and intolerance, and its fortunes have mirrored those of the Religious Right as a whole. When the United States Constitution, with its guarantees of religious freedom and its abolition of religious tests for political office, went into effect in , most of the conservative Christian sects withdrew from active involvement in politics, preferring to focus on religious proselytizing.
That began to change in the first years of the 20th century. These policies were horrifying to the conservatives, who viewed them as the communistic work of the Devil. At the same time, large advances were being made in science, especially the biology of evolution, which conservatives viewed as undermining the authority of the Bible.

You have only to ask him this one question: Perceptive, discerning people who evaluate BJU’s students and grads will likely be met with a distinctive brand of Jonesian idolatry. One of the most telling portions of the letter detailed Bob Jr. Underwood noted that BJU’s Bible faculty was originally Calvinist, taught Calvinism to the students, and the students embraced that which they were taught.
I’m not a Calvinist but after reading this letter it appeared that BJU started out as a Calvinist university and then changed to Armenianism because the Joneses thot that would attract more students. The point is not Calvinism. The point is that BJU’s leadership demonstrated a lack of competence, honesty, and consistency in selecting the religious doctrine they were being paid to teach to their customers students.
When it became advantageous to change the religious beliefs being taught to their customers, they fired their Calvinist staff, hired new people who would teach what they taught, and betrayed the graduates to whom they taught the old doctrine.

It is sort of like saying that just because we Baptists supported slavery when slavery was an “acceptable belief and act” then it makes us wrong NOW. In the same light, today the church is against homosexuality and abortion, while the rest of society has already made the adaptation that there is no wrong in either of these issues. In 50 years the church will accept these as OK and your decedents will be pointing out how cruel and harsh the church was for being so “backwards”. While most Baptists can’t see how it is possible that the church will accept it, the slaver owners couldn’t see how the church would eventually reject slavery either since the Bible clearly allows it.
So one can’t make an argument that a group is wrong because of “past” beliefs. It can only be judged by what current conditions. I’m almost positive that BJU is teaching against homosexual relationships right now.

Print Article AA The Christian college infamous for its long-running ban on interracial dating put out a lengthy and seemingly heartfelt apology on Thursday for its bigoted past policies. Nowhere in the apology, though, does the university mention anything about its current bigoted policies toward gays. We guess that in Arizona, where the conservative electorate double-downed on its ban of gay marriage in the last election, nobody’s surprised that a Greenville, South Carolina Bible college wouldn’t want gay students hanging around in its dormitories — though we find it hard to believe that any self-respecting gay would seek to matriculate at the school.
It was only last year that three homosexual activists were arrested at the BJU for trespassing in their bid to talk to Bob Jones administrators about the school’s ban on homosexuality. The school does not explicitly reference homosexuality in its policies, but generally bans all “sexual perversion,” which would include homosexuality, according to a school bulletin quoted in an article on the right-wing Christian Web site World Net Daily.

A former president of Bob Jones University, a conservative Christian school in South Carolina, has issued an apology for a statement he made in on stoning homosexuals. BJU Chancellor Bob Jones III was president of the university in March of when he and a group of fundamentalist ministers brought to the White House a petition signed by 70, people who opposed extending provisions of the Civil Rights Act to gays.
